Morning Report: Yen leads after strong trade balance

Morning Report: 08.45 London

The yen is on the front foot again this morning after stronger than expected merchandise trade balance data. The USD/ JPY is down 0.41%, with the EUR/ JPY off by 0.45%.

The euro is showing particular weakness after the Troika stated that they would be extending their inspection of Athens, while Cyprus tries to amend the terms of its bailout due to a worsening economic environment.
The dollar index is testing the lows again, helping the NZD/ USD to push higher.

Coming up today:

From 09.30 we have the release of the minutes from the last MPC meeting, with no changes expected.
From 19.00, we have the day’s main event – the FOMC’s statement and economic projections. The press conference follows at 09.30.

Bet Idea:

In their recent statement, the Reserve Bank of Australia noted that the Australian dollar had fallen, but still had room to fall further.

With this in mind, now could be a good time to re-load on AUD/ USD short positions ahead of the FOMC.
A good way to play this could be a LOWER trade predicting that the AUD/ USD closes below 0.9475 in 5 days for a potential return of 117%.

It’s been a solid day for the euro today after European ZEW economic sentiment came in above estimates. Meanwhile the British pound has suffered after inflation came in above estimates with PPI dropping more than expected.

Gold has been the day’s big loser though as money flows back into the euro.

Morning Report: Hopes High For G8

Markets have a positive bias this morning as the G8 summit rumbles on. The euro in particular is performing well after Greek politics were reduced to simmer after boiling over again recently.

The big movers are the AUD/ USD and NZD/ USD which are down by 0.71% and 0.41% respectively. The latest RBA meeting minutes indicated that there was more downside for the AUD/ USD. The dollar pairs are generally on the back foot as the US dollar gains across he board this morning.

Coming up today:

Coming up today we have UK inflation data at 09.30, with CPI expected to rise to 2.6% and RPI to 3.1%.
German and European ZEW economic sentiment follow at 10.00.
US building permits are released at 13.30, with CPI out at the same time.
The G8 meetings will rumble on in the background throughout the day.

Bet Idea:

The NZD/ USD has fallen back from the 0.8100 region with the recent lows a potential target once again.

A good way to play this could be a LOWER trade predicting that the NZD/ USD closes below 0.7900 in 5 days time could return 172% if successful.

This evening, the Japanese yen has gradually clawed back some of the morning’s losses as general risk off theme creeps into the late session. The yen’s strength is also being helped by the dollar index falling despite better than expected US Empire State manufacturing data.

The NZD/ USD has fallen back significantly after the morning’s excitement subsides.

Morning Report: Markets kick start week with buying action

After a volatile week, markets have a more positive bias this morning with the yen especially backing off from recent highs. The AUD/ JPY is the biggest mover after better than expected New Zealand consumer confidence data filtered over into Aussie strength. The yen is also generally weaker as the dollar recovers some ground lost last week.

The euro/ pound relationship continues its volatility, with the pound edging it this morning following strong housing data and encouraging reports from the institute of accountants.

Coming up today:

Coming up today we US empire state manufacturing data at 13.30, but the day will no doubt be dominated by headlines from the latest G8 summit.

Bet Idea:

The GBP/ JPY is recovering well this morning, but the pair still has some way to correct despite the yen’s recent resurgence.

Morning Report: Rally stumbles as yen regains control

This morning, financial markets are on the back foot again after more slowing China growth estimates were released. It’s the yen pairs that are seeing the biggest movements after the released of the latest BOJ minutes which implied that further Quantitative Easing could be limited.
The AUD/ JPY is the biggest mover, down 1.32%, with the USD/ JPY off by 0.91% and the EUR/ JPY down 1.12%

The dollar pairs are also on the move, with the AUD/ USD erasing some of yesterday’s gains. The GBP/ USD off by 0.23%.

Coming up today:

This morning we have European CPI data at 10.00.
This is followed by Canadian manufacturing sales at 13.30, with US PPI at the same time.
Capacity Utilisation follows at 14.15, with industrial production at the same time.
Prelim UoM consumer sentiment ends the trading week at 14.55.

Bet Idea:

The AUD/ JPY as swung lower again this morning after lower Chinese growth came into focus once again. AUD/ JPY weekly chart:

There could be further downside and a LOWER trade could be the best way to play this. A LOWER trade predicting that the AUD/ JPY closes below 90.75 in 5 days time for a potential return of 133%.

Morning Report: Strong Yen rebounds on growth fears.

This morning, the Japanese Yen is riding high as world markets sell off. Financial markets have been rocked overnight after the World Bank cut its 2013 global economic forecasts to 2.2% from 2.4% and Chinese growth forecasts to 7.7%. Morgan Stanley also cut its China forecasts to 7.9% annual growth.

The dollar index and S&P 500 are both extending their recent sell off.

The yen is top dog as the USD/ JPY drops 1.79%, with the AUD/ JPY off by 1.92%.

The Australian dollar is selling off despite better than expected employment data, but poor China growth forecasts have trumped this good news.
The euro is showing some relative strength though with the EUR/ USD extending recent gains.

Coming up today:

Coming up today we have US core retail sales at 13.30, with unemployment claims released at the same times. Business inventories are released at 15.00.

Bet Idea:

This morning, the EUR/ GBP is pushing higher, but in recent weeks, the pair has often pulled back from the highs as shown by the long upper wicks. The general trend is slipping lower and this could be the way to play the pair.

A LOWER trade predicting that the EUR/ GBP closes below 0.8500 in 5 days for a potential return of 155%.

This afternoon, a collection of positive economic data have helped markets find their feet today. As a consequence, the US dollar index has sold off again, touching new multi month lows.

The NZD/ USD has been the biggest mover, up 1.48% ahead of tonight’s interest rate statement.

Gold is also improving, up 1.02%.

The yen pairs have been mixed though as the USD/ JPY returns to the unchanged mark for the day.

Morning Report: Aussie Rebounds As Short Sales Unwind

Morning Report: 08.30 London

Financial markets have a positive bias this morning as the short selling pressure subsides. Overnight Australian Westpac Consumer Sentiment came in above expectations, helping the AUD/ JPY to rally off the lows.
The AUD/ JPY is up 1.19%, with the AUD/ USD up 0.42%.

The yen pairs are generally on the rise with the GBP/ JPY up 0.93% and the USD/ JPY up 0.43%.

Dollar pair movements are generally muted though ahead of today’s German constitutional court ruling.

Coming up today:

At some point today we have the German constitutional court ruling on the European bailouts. Most are expecting this to pass without problem, but this is far from guaranteed.
From 09.30 we have UK claimant count change data, with the unemployment rate expected to stay the same at 7.8%.
From 10.00, we have European Industrial Production.
From 15.30 switch to the US, with Crude Oil inventories at 15.30 and the Federal budget balance at 19.00.
The RBNZ rate statement is due at 22.00.

Bet Idea:

The German constitutional court ruling is due at some point and until this is released, the EUR/ USD could remain tied down.
The outcome is no certainty, but European politics has a history of getting rulings like this through – and even if it were not to pass, some loophole may be found.

This could see some short term upside on the EUR/ USD with a HIGHER trade potentially the best way to play this.
A HIGHER trade predicting that the EUR/ USD will close above 1.3350 in 5 days time could return 114% if successful.
